De eerste bewoners die op Bests grondgebied woonden, dateren uit 1700 v. Dit blijkt uit opgravingen in de Aarlese Heide ten zuiden van het Wilhelminakanaal. Best hoorde aanvankelijk tot de gemeente Oirschot en bestond uit de buurtschappen Naastenbest en Verrenbest. Daarnaast waren er de buurtschappen Aarle en De Vleut, die tot heden een landelijk karakter hebben behouden. Aanvankelijk bestond er een houten kapel, naar verluidt op de plaats waar Sint-Odulphus werd geboren. Een document uit 1378 maakt voor het eerst melding van deze kapel. Kerkdiensten vonden echter nog te Oirschot plaats.
