Battered cod

The battered cod was my beacon of hope in such a dark, confusing time in my life. I finally learned that I am a survivor not a victim any more. My child thrived in a safe and loving environment at the Center.

I came out of the shelter a totally different person. I learned how to advocate for myself. I’m not afraid any more to speak up when I disagree with someone. Thanks to your devotion, endless patience and endurance, I am in a much better place today.

I learned how to write a resume, prepare for a job interview, and budget my finances. I came out of the shelter loving myself and loving others. I felt immediately at home at the Center. You were there when my water broke and when I had my beautiful baby. Now I know who I am, how much I am worth, and who to bring into my life.

To address the problem of domestic violence on the Cape and Islands, it takes the whole community. The Cape Cod Center for Women in Massachusetts is the only 24-hour, 7-day-a-week confidential domestic violence emergency shelter and sexual assault hotline serving Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. The Center is dedicated to providing quality programs and services to individuals and families escaping violence or abuse. Since its founding in 2000, the Center has provided sanctuary for more than 500 families and hotline services for approximately 10,000 callers, thanks, in part, to private donors and community support. We measure our success one family at a time.

We work with individuals and families for at least one year after they leave our program, and in that period 80 percent have remained violence-free. We work around-the-clock because domestic violence never takes a day off. If you need help, please contact us. If you want to help, please join us.

Dried and salted cod, sometimes referred to as salt cod or saltfish or salt dolly, is cod which has been preserved by drying after salting.

Cod which has been dried without the addition of salt is stockfish. Dried and salted cod has been produced for over 500 years in Newfoundland, Iceland, and the Faroe Islands, and most particularly in Norway where it is called klippfisk, literally “cliff-fish”. Salt cod formed a vital item of international commerce between the New World and the Old, and formed one leg of the so-called triangular trade. The drying of food is the world’s oldest known preservation method, and dried fish has a storage life of several years. Traditionally, salt cod was dried only by the wind and the sun, hanging on wooden scaffolding or lying on clean cliffs or rocks near the seaside. Drying preserves many nutrients, and the process of salting and drying codfish is said to make it tastier.
